This is a bugfix release, fixing Houdini Indie on Windows and Mac, and adding SDF volume rendering.

  1. Get the install files on Solid Angle Downloads.
  2. Follow these installation instructions.

This release uses Arnold and OpenVDB 3.1.0.

Binaries available for the following Houdini, Houdini FX, Houdini Indie and Houdini Education production builds:

  • 15.5.523
  • 15.5.480
  • 15.0.459

and for the following platforms:

  • Linux x86_64 (gcc4.8)
  • Windows 7 x64 (vc11, vc14)
  • Mac OS X 10.8+ (clang7.3)

Please note that Houdini Apprentice does not support third party renderers and thus cannot run HtoA.

  • SDF volumes: The volume_sample_float shader now supports Signed Distance Function grids, allowing precise volumic representation of polygonal objects with less voxels (htoa#801). This adds 4 new parameters to the volume_sample_float shader:
    • volume_type: Interpret the volume data as fog (density) or SDF (signed distance function). In SDF mode, the inside is converted to a constant density of 1.
    • sdf_offset: Offset the SDF values by this distance, allowing to dilate or erode the SDF boundary shape.
    • sdf_blend: The distance over which to smooth out the edges of the SDF.
    • sdf_invert: By default, positive distances represent space outside of the boundary while negative distances mean inside. This parameter lets you invert this convention.
  • Orthographic adaptive subdivision: Adaptive subdivision mode now works with orthographic cameras (core#5425)
Incompatible changes
  • Fixed incorrect texel offset from persp_camera.uv_remap. This will slightly change the output of cameras using a distortion map (core#5420)

  • Fixed Houdini Indie rendering on Windows and OSX (htoa#808)
  • Fixed "invalid parameter name" log messages (htoa#799)
  • Fixed crash when calling asCode() on objects with Arnold properties (htoa#809)
  • Fixed incorrect motion blur with timeblend SOP (htoa#811)
