This shader parameter may be used to link closure shaders to control color and transparency. The output in Softimage is a color, but internally it's a closure. A Closure shader is created on the fly whenever a Standard shader is created from the Arnold top menu.

Arnold 5 differentiates between color and closure type outputs. These are BSDF, BSSRDF, emission, matte, transparency and volume closures. A closure can be connected only to a closure type input. You can only link a shader to these closure type parameters.

Closure shaders can only be connected to closure ports.
