This is a feature release, adding support for light linking and Arnold

  1. Get the install files on Solid Angle Downloads.
  2. Follow these installation instructions.

This release uses Arnold and OpenVDB 3.0.0.

Binaries available for the following Houdini or Houdini FX production builds:

  • 13.0.665
  • 13.0.621

and for the following platforms:

  • Linux x86_64 (gcc4.4)
  • Windows 7 x64 (vc11)
  • Mac OS X 10.8+

Please note that Houdini Apprentice and Houdini Indie do not support third party renderers and thus cannot run HtoA.


The full release notes of Arnold are available here, follows some of the highlights:

  • Transmission component in hair shader: The built-in hair shader now includes an additional energy conserving, Marschner-style transmission component (also known as TT).

  • Volume mattes: The matte parameter is now respected for volume objects, where they will skip lighting and render faster, with the total opacity of the volume cutting out alpha just as surface matte objects do.

  • Extended motion vector min_pixel_width support: Now correctly computed for all built-in cameras, not just persp_camera.
  • Support node-locked licences: Node-locked licenses can now be automatically loaded if they are placed along with the Arnold binaries or in the path specified in the solidangle_LICENSE environment variable.
  • Light and shadow linking, controllable through the Light Linker or Light Bank panels. Reflection and refraction linking are not supported (#31)
  • Most Arnold light parameters are now available in the Light Bank spreadsheet (#31)
  • The Volume Collector shader now lets you select explicitly the source for scattering, attenuation and emission instead of the previous hidden logic depending on connections and channel names (#530)
  • Volume Collector shader optimizations (#509)
  • New Transmission parameters in the Hair shader and HDA (#535)
  • New Matte parameter on Arnold Volume (#535)
  • Initial inclusion of Standard shader material presets from this tutorial page (#537)
  • Fixed exception when trying to render AutoDopNetworks (#532)
  • Ray derivatives were inverted in the Camera Projection shader (#524)
  • Standard SHOP material parameter links were broken (#538)
Incompatible changes
  • The Volume Collector shader parameters have changed, you'll need to update your scenes accordingly to select the right source for scattering, attenuation and emission.
  • The legacy ARNOLD_LICENSE_{HOST|PORT} environment variables are no longer supported, please use the standard RLM environment variables solidangle_LICENSE or RLM_LICENSE.
